Indonesia - Logistically is it still a reasonable overlanders route??

Hi all,
In Vientiane atm, but will be making my way down into Cambodia. Then westerly into Thailand, Malaysia....

Originally I intended to make my way all the way to East timor before shipping to Aus... However, I have become a little confused reading various threads.... (I am with my Mitsubishi Delica)

Is my only choice to container ship to Sumatra (Medan??) and is my Cdp Carnet still recognised their (my customs broker in bangkok, said they do not use anymore)

I know their has been a lot of changes their recently, so basically is it still possible....

My other thought would be to ship from Port Klang, Malaysia to Austalia (hopefully get a slow boat) and backpack a little of Indo on my own. Logistically and financially might be a more reasonable option....

Can anyone clear this up for me?? (keeping in mind its a 4X4, not motorcycle, so would require a 20ft container)

Many thanks
