India 3rd Party Insurance - Is it compulsory?
 

Hi,

Is it a legal requirement to purchase 3rd party insurance for India?

I am in Amritsar and will be in India for 1 month... If I do not get it, will i have problems exiting?

If It is 100% necessary, where and with whom could i obtain it?

Ofcourse I think I will get it regardless, just confirming.

It depends if the bike you are riding is owned by you or if it belongs to a rental. If it belongs to a rental, they will normally have it insured in their name in which case you dont need to get a new one.

You only have to get an insurance if you have the bike transfered to you. Also in case of a rental, if the bike's insurance is about to expire, ask them to renew it for you.

Mandatory or not, I don't know (actually would be interesting to know). When I entered from Pakistan on my bike registered in Europe, no-one mentioned insurance in any way, and we didn't get one. Was never asked about it either, but it was a little exciting, when stopped by the cops a few times. Spent almost 2 months in India, rode to the south, and exited via Chennai. But this was over 4 years ago.

As you probably know already, having no insurance can become a major problem, if you are involved in a serious accident. (But some cheap border insurance might not do much for you in reality, either!)... anyway, if such insurance is easily available, I guess the simple advice is to get it.

Thanks guys.... Yes I crossed from Pakistan at the Wagah Border in my Mitsubishi Delica and their was no mention of it their..... And from memory, no idea where it would be there anyway.... but i am thinking I would like to get it... just dont know where.... maybe Delhi?

There are many international Insurers who have tied up with Indian companies. You can google the one which you are aware of (as in your country) and see if it exists in India.

Ask a local where their insurance company is, and then go along and apply. It is quite a straightforward process and cheap by western standards. If it is a reasonable sized insurance company, the forms will be in english or the agent will complete them for you.

They may insist in putting your bike down on the form as a Four Seater:innocent:
When I tried to point out that it was a motorbike for two people, the insurance guy said to me

"Madam, this is India":clap:

It is a legal requirement to have the insurance, I got it because the road conditions, driving and the traffic is so very chaotic that there is a higher than usual possibility of a collision of some sort- and not your fault. It will smooth things if you actually have the bit of paper to show to the police to prove you're insured locally.

Hi All,

Does anybody have an update on getting insurance for India? I'm in Kolkata waiting for my truck to clear customs. Starting to look around to try and find out about insurance.
