Importing Bike Overland from India to the UK

I've been riding on and off for a about 7 years now. Now 23 and just finished uni. Basically I'm looking to do some volunteer work Dharamsala, India for 3-6 months. Considering going overland as I have always wanted to disapear into the sunset on an mc.

I know that the journey may/will be troublesome regarding visa's and alike. Not decided on route yet, will post somewhere else and read others advice. Basically what i'm wandering is, how much hastle it would be to by a bike in India e.g. Enfield Bullet and ride it back. How would I get insurance for such when back in Europe? Any possible hurdles? Is there anything which would make it impossible?

I should also say that my budget is not great. Maybe £3000 including bike and living in India for 3 months.

Regards

Hutch

Buying a Royal enfield bike in india

hi Hutch,

the prices of the NEW royal enfield bikes vary from state to state in india...

secondly different models hav different prices...

A BULLET STD 350cc was for around 72,000 rupees (900 uk pounds) a few weeks ago in NEW DELHI...

the 500 cc however is the most expensive bike by royal enfield...which comes closer to almost 1,00,000 rupees (1250 UK pounds)..

however used bikes r pretty cheap comparatively.....
a good condition STD 350, 3-4 years old wud be somewhere around 35 to 40 thousand rupees (500 uk pounds)...

but one cant beat the quality and performance of a brand new bullet...

As for the stay....one can get a decent room for around 300-400 rupees (<5 pounds) per day....the rates can go lower too, if u r willing to forgo the double bed and the AC....

i am not very well versed about the process of taking a bike outta India....maybe other members can help u here...

cheers

Hey Sobby.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at buying a second hand 500 if I do. Otherwise I might well ride bothe there and back on something brought in the UK. Possibly a GT550 would be a good hack?

I'm planning on doing volunteer work while i'm out there and would be staying in dharmasala working with tibetan monks. I think cost for staying there would be in the region of £40 a month!!! Shocking I know.

I dont think I would run into major troubles in bringing the bike into the UK however I may well run into difficulties in bringing the bike out of India and through some of the neighbouring countries (Pakistan and Iran).

Anyway thanks for the reply and if anyone can give me any idea as to how much hastle this may be....

There's a ton of info on this subject - just do a search, both on the HUBB and on the site - search box at the top right.

Basic answer - for a foreigner to take a bike out of India with a carnet is technically impossible. There are other ways, all tricky, but it HAS been done - whether you will succeed is another matter - do a lot of research before trying it!
