Canadian Automobile Association - alternates?

Has anyone in North America tried to buy a carnet through ADAC in Germany or elsewhere? RAC in the UK? The prices listed for the CAA are crazy and more than double elsewhere.

In 2005/2006 you could buy them in the Czech republic. Can you still do that?

Technically you MUST buy from your home country carnet issuing authority - CAA for Canadians and Americans - UNLESS your home country does not have a carnet issuing authority.

Talk to Suzanne Danis at the CAA about the price to be sure you're not comparing apples and oranges. She is very good, very helpful and tell her we sent you.

Also the CAA now has an insurance plan, so check that out.

I know Suzanne, I've dealt with her before in 2006 when I went half way around. The issue is that one can get the same carnet, same countries, same bike, for 260 Euro from ADAC vs. 650 CAD from CAA, add in the cost of shipping the carnet from Germany and 50 Euro to get the bank guarantee translated. I just wanted to see if there were other English speaking countries that issued them for a better price, that's all.

more carnet related mysteries

Please let me get that straight:

I'm a Canadian living momentarily in Egypt driving an Egyptian licensed LR Defender (not homologated in Canada). Do I absolutely have to get the carnet for the LR from Canada to roam out of the country or if I can/should get it from the Egyptian authority? When Grant writes "Technically you MUST buy from your home country carnet issuing authority" are we talking about our country of residence or the country where our vehicle is registered?

That's a bugger because I have little trust in Egyptian ways of dealing with these issues and chances are they actually get it wrong, not to mention what is lost in translation. I just would hate finding out once at the border down South. I guess it is a special case and I don't want to hijack this thread. Carnet or not to Carnet is a recurring topic, how to Carnet certainly remains a mystery to many, to me at least, such a mystery that I'm always amazed how specifically the related knowledge and capacity on this subject seems to be held by very few when you actually consider the apparent growing number of overlanders. I need to give this more attention I guess. To be continued.

My understanding is that the Carnet is/ should/ "must" be issued by the national auto club of the country where the vehicle is registered.

This is usually said, shorthand,--as Grant does above--"...your home country..." because 90% of Carnet applicants are citizens/ residents of the same country in which their vehicle is registered.

Having said that, I understand the concern about whether the "Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt (ATCE)"--which is listed by both FIA and CAA as the official auto club in Egypt--will necessarily understand the rules in the same way (or whether this national auto club will even issue Carnets--not all do).

You're in an unusual situation. I don't recall anyone on this HUBB forum ever asking about or reporting on the process of obtaining a Carnet for an
Egyptian registered vehicle. You'll have to call/ contact the club in Egypt and see what they tell you....."to be continued" Good luck.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
