How far East from the UK can I go before needing paperwork?
I need to escape. I can't escape until Monday so I thought best to find out about Visas or any other paperwork I will need to take with me.

I figure most of Europe is pretty straightforward but what about places like Poland, Belarus and Russia? I don't know if I will get that far. I don't even know how deep into Russia I could go this time of year considering the weather!

8 new nations
well on 21-December-2008 there will be 8 more east-nation joining the EU, see the image (its borrowed from a German newspaper)
so from then on you only need your driving license, passport, green-insurance paper and vehicle documents, no border control any more, just ride along like as you would hop over to France and get some fags on a day trip....
ohhh yea... don't mind this German cop... ;o) but be aware that they equipped with high tech laser around Berlin.... they are hidden and cash up to fill the empty pockets of there little towns....

Suggest you go further south for warmer weather; snowing in Moscow in the news tonight & you'll need a visa at least!

You can go upto and into Turkey if you like; even there it is pretty cold I believe, especially on the high ground.
Or, go even further south into Spain and onto Morocco; check the numerous threads in here about the latter.

I don't know if I love or hate my impulsive nature but it certainly makes things interesting.

Ok trip itinerary:
Amsterdam (my spiritual home but I might skip this because it screws with crossing times)
Stuttgart, Germany
Prague, Czech Republic
Budapest, Hungary
Ljubljana, Slovenia
San Marino, Italy (maybe by boat)
Rome, Italy (skippable depending on time)
Monaco
Long ride home through France to Calais or something (Ridden French roads before and they were pretty boring)

As far as I can tell all of those stops and the routes required to get to them are safely within the EU and within my "limited documentation" requirements.

I have 2 full weeks to ride that route, Does it seem reasonable? I intend to pack light and travel quite large distances each day with short stopovers whenever I am tired and longer stays in the bigger destinations.

I have checked with my insurance company and I am fully covered to ride in any country in the EU, my passport is up to date, I have an IDP.

Bikes been recently serviced, new tyres booked to go on it in Stuttgart, Handwarmers being fitted Sunday.

What have I forgotten?

across all Europa and Turkiye until Iran. You need carnet for Iran.

You need a passport for Serbia and Turkey, but that's it (for Turkey you buy a visa sticker on entry).

Also for Ukraine you can buy a visa at the border (you'll have to buy insurance at the border as well), so no prep and rewarding!.

you don't need visa for Ukraine anymore since they had the Eurovision Song Contest there a year or two ago...

By the way inaddition to previous post;

There will not be 8 new members of the EU, but 8 new members of Schengen which is very different.
You officially also don't need green card on you anymore if you stay within the EU, but I know that Greece sometimes is awkward and police on the border might ask you.

consider Corsica/Corse if your that close, prices and crowds are off , twisty roads but watch it as it can be dangerous, blind corners, wild hogs etc... not the place if you want high speed, knee draggin riding. it can get cold/snow in the interior but hang on the coasts, D roads are the best. prices are cheaper towards the interior. then hit sardina...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
