Can someone give me a definitive list of countries that I can travel to overland (including sea crossings) from the UK without any prearranged visas or carnet?
So basically with just my passport, drivers license and bike registration document?
and a pocket full of money…

Hi,
How about from the North Cape (Norway) to the Turkish border with Iran and "everywhere in between", as a rule of thumb.

Oh yea, + Iceland (?)

and you can get to South Africa with what you have. i did it with a carnet and no pre aranged visas.

but the carnet is not essential- just makes it cleaner

This is my first post, (great site btw). Im at the start of planing a trip from scotland to south africa... for August 08. Ive never overlanded on a motorcycle before so Im very very new to the whole experience of carnet's etc...

Id just like to ask a few questions on the above post.

If the carnet isn't essential on such a trip which route did you take?
And did you have to pay any money at any border crossing's if you dont have your carnet?.

Is it more advisable to get a carnet before I embark on my trip?.

Sorry if this has all been covered it's just that Ive heard some conflicting information on this route regarding carnets and would really like to have a clear view in my mind and on paper before setting anything else in motion.

My planned route was from the UK down the east coast of africa to SA.

Id also appreciate any info or travel tips of my route.

The caucasus-central asia, mongolia siberia route can be done with the minimum of hassle, just a few visas that require a letter of introduction (easy to get). My route last year was: UK-France-Italy- Slovenia- Croatia- Bosnia- Albania- Greece- Turkey- Georgia- Azerbaijan- Turkemnistan (short boat ride to avoid Iran, very expensice carnet req)- Uzbekistan - Kazakhstan - Russia - latvia - Lituania - Poland - Germany - Holland - UK. Easy to set up, awesome trip, highly recommended!

You can't get into Central Asia though without visas in advance! Visas at the border stop after Turkey, although you can get a visa for Georgia at the border.

Very true, but they are not hard to get, as stated you just need an LOI in advance for the visa office you are going to get the visa at. If you're low on free time there are a number of agencies that will take your passport, get the LOI's, do the queing for you etc.
