How do you get it right to use 2 passports?
we applied for two passports from South Africa one, to get visas as we go and then get them couriered to us and in the mean time use the other passport.
Now every counrty we go through want to see the previous counrty's exit stamp, and do not want to stamp our other passports so we can use them getting the visas.
It is for going up Africa from SA and we need to do this for Sudan, and Ethiopia.

Good to see you on the Hubb too. We changed our passsports once at a land border crossing. We changed from a UK passport to a SA passport. the first time we tried it was Syria to Jordan. The officials didn't want to accept it because of the same reason you state. They want to see an entry/exit stamp from the previous country before they will stamp you in. We were told that it was to prevent duplication and probably also to try and prevent passports being changed/altered (photos changed etc). We had a fairly lenghty discussion with the head of immigration at the crossing to try and convince him to accept the change, but he didn't want to.

We managed to change passports on the ferry between jordan(aqaba) and Nuweiba (Eqypt). I think the only reason why we managed that successfully was because we got an Egyptian visa in our SA passports while we were still in London.

I would personally not bother to try and travel on 2 different passports of the same country, but is is helpful if one gets stolen to have a back up one.

Visa days are a real pain in the backside...

p.s - did you manage to sort out the rear shock?

using 2 passports
we have 2 passports. we only change them if absolutely necessary during international flights/connections between continents. other than that you are asking for trouble as most countries you are entering will most definitely ask to see your exit stamp from the previous country. you need to be very careful how and when you 'swop' over and be absolutely sure its safe and necessary to do so otherwise you could be asking for a whole load of trouble!

we hold a 2nd passport as a 'fail safe'. so far we have never needed this 'fail safe' but....you never know!

when one passport gets full we can still travel using the other one and not have to wait for our passport to be renewed and returned to us prior to being able to continue.
other than that it may work out as little benefit to have 2.

Thanks for the reply. Seems what you say is the norm no getting around it. Luckily between Zambia and Malawi the officials did not check properly and they stampoed the one passport we need to use.
We will try and get the visas for Ethiopia and Sudan in Kenay or Tanzania and see what happens. Other than that we need to post it to SA and apply there.

But what do you do in a counrty while your passport is in SA if police stop you or at road blocks?

Shock is sorted Pumbaa, now the damn waterpump gears on the Dakar gave up the ghost. We are at least sitting at Fat Monkeys in Malawi so it'sw all cool waiting for spares.

Hi - I had some experience of travelling on 2 UK passports - see the Overland Travel Tips section of my site - overlandcruiser.net, although it it is pretty similar to yours. There may be some mileage in enlisting the services of a 'fixer' at the border crossing though.

I still think it's a weird rule - they wouldn't turn you away for not having an exit stamp from where you'd just left if you were an EU national and landed at the airport on a flight from any EU airport where you don't get an exit stamp, would they?
