Renewing Mexico Permit??

I need to leave the country to renew my permit for Mexico. Is it necesary to leave the frontier, or can i go to the Benjercito, hand in my old permit and request a new one without leaving the country? My Visa is good for another few months and i can get that renewed in DF. Thanx in advance.

Probably no need to actually leave Mexico . If your tourist permit / visa is still valid and you a re in one of the border towns you are already in the zona fronteriza anyway . Just go directly to Banjercito counter with your tourist permit and the old temp.import paper. They will direct you to the cancelling place. Then you can get a new import permit and pay up.

I'm often wrong, but believe from searching my feeble mental reserve banks that you'll need to get a new vehicle permit at a border.

If you do have to go to a border and want to stay longer than your current tourist card allows, do not show your current tourist card, just get a new one. In that scenario, your tourist card is gone/expired way back, etc. 'Officially' there's a 72 hr wait unless your old tourist card is expired.

Please post back on what the deal is.

Talking

Actually, i confirmed with an immigration lawyer the other day that you only need to leave to renew your visa, there is no time limit. Same day is fine. Visa's can also be taken care of in DF if you know the right people. The bike permit is another thing. I'll probably cross into the states and go shopping for a day, the hack chip for the I-Phone is pretty cheap down here

If you are in the DF try going to Banjercito near the Hipodromo and ask for Nayeli Franco. She is in charge of importacion temporal de vehiculos. You should be able to get an extension for up to 180 days in total. If you want more than that you have to go to the border to do it. You may be able to call Nayeli and I may even have her number at home.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
