HELP! Insurance / Carnet Tax etc
Hi

I'm in the UK and want to drive a 4x4 round Africa and the Middle East for two years starting Sept 2005. I have a few questions, and would greatly appreciate some help answering them.

1. What is the deal with insurance? With UK insurance will I be insured outside the EU? Surely not?

2. Will I need an insurance policy in Africa / Middle East or do I buy insurance in each country?

3. The Carnet thing... do I need to go back to the UK after 1 year to get an MOT to keep the Carnet Valid? Is it valid if I have no UK road tax?

4. Whats a Green Card? Is it expensice?

I guess you can see where I'm coming from and I'm interested in any tips for saving money / cheating the system in this area.

My drive will probably be a Landcruiser if thats relevant.

Two answers to your question
You do not need MOT, Tax to renew your Carnet after a year
You do not have to return to the UK to renew the Carnet, you do it over the internet but you do have to have an address abroad for them to send it to.

OK... thanks so far.

As I see it then the Carnet is simply an official document to stamp a car into / out of certain countries. This leads me to ask two questions then:

1. Do you need to return the vehicle to the country of issue, or due you simply need to return the carnet with entrance / exit stamps to every country?

2. Would there be certain situations where it is cheaper to have your carnet stamped rather than buying a laisez passer? Do countries charge for stamping your carnet?

re. your carnet questions :

1. RAC issues either a 5, 10 or 25 page carnet. Each page represents an entry & exit with the vehicle for a country. For a tour of this length we would advise a 25 page document. You keep the carnet with you for the entire trip & only return to us on your return to GB for cancellation when the security held against issue is released.

If you will be travelling for more than a year, a new carnet can be issued to follow on from the expiry date of the original (subject to permission from customs if you will be in South Africa, for example). As indicated above, re-issue can be arranged via telephone, fax or email from overseas. An appropriate security (bank guarantee or insurance indemnity) must remain in place.

2. Customs should not make a charge for stamping of carnet on entry/exit.

If you have further questions regarding the carnet or to request an application form, please telephone either Sue Collins or myself on 01454 208000.

can you tell if RAC Bristol can make Carnet for Estonian citizens too? Or you know any other organisation who can organize that?

I checked our country's car club and nobody even have heard from the document!(?)(!)?

Sorry, RAC in Great Britain are unable to issue a carnet to you.

The German motoring organisation "ADAC" has recently agreed to issue carnets to applicants from other countries. Please click on this link :
