Help impoting bike into SA!!!!!!

Hi I was looking for help importing my bike into SA, I have been to various departments, phoned numbers and been ****ed about and passed on to the wrong person or just put on hold. Is there are goverment website where I can find out what import duty I need to pay, I need to pay duty AND VAT? what % do I need to pay/ also is this worked out from the amount in my carnet or on the sale price? I am in Cape Town is there a customs/ tax building I can go in person and get the answers I need with out being mess about?
I am trying to find out exactly how much it is going to cost me to import the bike as I need to decide to take it home or sell it here. So if I get my asking price of 1750 pounds how much tax will I have to pay in total?
Thanks for any help.
George

South Africa - South African Import Regulations - Import Export Cars Vehicles Goods Items Merchandise

This link should help. You will need to get a Letter of Authority from the SABS to import the bike and of course they will determine if it needs to have a "Safety Certificate" issued. Once you have the LOA then the customs will determine the import duties accoding to the rates you will find in the attached URL. To give you an idea of what it cost me to bring my XR650R and a 200cc Blaster Quad back from Dubai with me: ZAR12000.00 I literally paid the vat

Hope this helps.

Hi George

Just picked up this thread with regard to sale of your bike in SA & carnet impact !

Please note under the terms of temporary import into a country you are generally not allowed to sell, hire, lend or leave a vehicle in a country, particularly if entry is controlled by use of the carnet system.

RAC incurs more claims from SA than any other country around the world. A vehicle can generally only be imported once residency is held for permanent import to be completed.

If you should sell/dispose of the bike in SA, RAC will incur a claim & we are not obliged to refund security held !!

Please call me on +1454 208304 to discuss options asap !!

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul

Surly I don't need to import a uk bike in to the uk, Some one said that this is refundable when the Carnet is returned, is this correct?
Thanks again for you help!

Hi George

Your mother called me last Friday !

Very pleased to hear that you will be shipping bike out of SA & your bank guarantee security can then be released once I get carnet returned to RAC (by secure mail please).

Someone somewhere has got their wires crossed regarding re-entry to GB. There are no duties liable/refundable linked to return of carnet.

Await to hear from you on your return.

Regards
Paul
