Hi Dave

Can you send me the scanned image in good enough quality for me to OCR it and create a page on the site?

Alternatively, do you have a paper copy you could mail me. We have a good document scanner with OCR software, and this information is frequently requested, so it makes sense to put a page up so people don't have to keep asking for it!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry Trand (and Dave)

The list Dave sent actually includes all countries participating in the carnet system, NOT just the ones which REQUIRE it. So it includes Canada, for example, which doesn't require the carnet but will issue it.

I wrote to the Canadian Automobile Association to try to get a list of just those countries which require a carnet, but they are reluctant to publish the list since it changes frequently.

So their suggestion is: travellers should just tell us (CAA) which countries they intend to visit and we'll tell them what the situation is at that time.

Trand, I suggest you try contacting the CAA and inquiring about specific countries that you plan to travel to - Suzanne Danis is very helpful, and has been working with international carnets for years, so quite knowledgeable as well.

E-mail sdanis@national.caa.ca

Thanks anyway, for the effort, Dave.

On September 17th, RL Davidson, the underwriter, told the RAC to stop issuing Carnets for Yemen, Pakistan, Oman, Egypt, India and Afganistan. The AA, with the same underwriter from what I can make out, has also excluded Pakistan and Egypt and made India, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Bangladesh and Libya with special conditions, read that as lots more money. Campbell Irvine are also offering Carnets but through the AA, I think.

Why this difference in countries, I don't know but Egypt is now a no go from UK agencies.

Does anyone know of a foreign agency offering a Carnet for a British registered vehicle for Egypt?

I am looking to get a Carnet from the AA very soon and have been speaking to someone there for a while. Apparently, India and Iran are still on the list but you have to put down an additional £1000 cash deposit. Pakistan is out though.. shame.. anyone know if we can just try to go through Pakistan without a carnet as that is the stopper on my trip to India.. I shall have to fly the bike otherwise.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
