germany to oz rego?
 

Hi i am buying an r100 in Germany and planning to ride it to oz. I plan to take between six and eight months. I have registered the bike in Germany for three months which covers me only for europe. Do i need the bike to be registered in Germany for the entire eight months or do you buy new insurance documents at each border. I plan to travel through Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Oz.

Check out www.dotars.gov.au "importing vehicles" section, lookup VSB10. Your period of ownership has to be in excess of one year to import a vehicle privately (unless the vehicle was built prior to 1/1/89 them you can import it with an import approval).

If you bring it in on a carnet then it MUST leave the country.

You can only apply for an import approval from DOTARS when the 1 year ownership period has elapsed. Maybe store the bike in Singapore?

I'd go for a 1 year German rego, then buy border insurance when required, dont forget you'll need a carnet as well.

You will need current rego as you pass through countries. Much easier to keep the rego german rather than geting new rego in each country... !!!!!!

Insurance is a seperate issue - and that maybe bought on the boarder if required .. I think..

If you plan on keeping the bike in Australia then what Roger said.

Thanks, i have purchased '88 r100 gs 70k on the clock but in very good condition. I hope she makes the trip. So I will increase rego for eight months i think. Then import from indo somewhere. I will be buying carnet from ADAC and need to leave 5000 euro behind as bond. Anyone know or have heard of any difficulties in retreiving bond or is there a best way of setting it up in the first place

good idea to buy a bike in Germany instead of shipping your own bike over.

* getting your money back from the ADAC should be not a problem if your carnet is complete and filled out correctly, but it can take some time.

* a normal German rego is valid until you go to the rego office (Strassenverkehrsamt) or you send your plates back (to get the stickers removed), so you wont get eight month with an expiry date. But you can not get a normal German rego in your name, because you dont have residency in Germany.

* you can get an export license plates (export rego), but I dont know for how long this is valid in Europe.

*your carnet is valid for one year, and this will be your document to cross borders in Asia.

*my advise. you dont need a valid rego if you are outside of Europe, only the carnet, and of course a paper that looks like a rego if somebody ever asks.

*insurance. you buy or you dont buy at every border. For Europe (included Turkey) your German export rego requires an insurance and from this insurance company you will get the Green card valid as long as your exports plates are valid.

I now have German export plates valid for three months in europe. However after three months i must leave europe or pay for longer insurance papers which would also include tax... I think. At the moment i am registered with export plates up until october where i should be in pakistan or India or there abouts.

#Do i need the bike to be registered in Germany during all of my travels if i do indeed need to buy insurance at the borders.

#will border patrols stop me in my tracks if bike does not have current registration. Of course they will be in german i cannot make sense of them will border patrols

# The cost will be 165 euro for another three months plus taxes is this money well spent or best saved and some sed for bakeesh
