Foreigner stuggling to register vehicle in South Africa - Any tips?

Hi

We are having problems registering our new vehicle with the SA authorities in J'burg, as they tell us we need to be residents or that we need a working permit. We are both non- SA without working permits and we do not think this is the case as we have read other foreigners have managed to register vehicles. Does anyone have any advice or recent experience of sucessfully registering with the authorities, especially in the Gautang region?

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks
Tammy

Did you manage?

Hi Tammy,

I just posted this thread (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...117#post230844) on the subject of buying and registering a car in South Africa.

Did you ever manage to do it? If so, do you have any advice??

Many thanks

Tim

We own a home in Port Elisabeth. my wife is from Germany and I am an American. We live in the US. We had a bit of difficulty but all in all it was fairly easy. There is an office at the local post office and all we needed was the title doc's from the previous owner! Didn't seem to be all that difficult a process. Let me know if we can be of help.

I registered a vehicle a few years ago in Cape Town and it wasn't difficult at all.

I simply provided a copy of my passport, an address (the hostel I was staying in) and my foreign drivers licence.

It might be worth trying to register it in another office and seeing if that is any easier.
