Extending vehicle permit for Brazil
 

Hi Everyone
I have searched for this answer but can´t find it.
It looks like I will be overstaying my 90 days in Brazil - it is straightforward to extend the tourist permit but I can´t seem to get the info about doing the same with my vehicle document which clearly says 90 dyas and also has an exit date.
has anyone done it?? and how on earth did Mika get 180 days??

PS had dinner with Mika 2 days ago(just before he left) - good to meet him at last. But didn´t know then that I might run out of time here and also didn´t get his email address

The Temporary Import Permit - something that is issued at EVERY border entry in South America - and don't end up like the two Americans I met who got into Brazil without being issued one and then had BIG problems when they tried to leave.
It IS possible to extend the permit in Brazil for a further 90 days. First extend your personal visa with the Policia Federal - this has to be done in State Capitals eg Rio, Sao Paulo, Fortaleza etc - be aware, the one I went to had a dress code - NO shorts. Then ask the police about the vehicle - they will hopefully direct you to the Aduana (customs)located in the Secretaria da Receita Federal, Ministerio da Fazenda- don't worry these words are printed at the top of the Temp Import Permit.
Tourist Information Offices can sometimes direct you to the correct building.
As this is South America you will likely be sent from one building to another until Bingo! you find the correct one. I did mine in Belem where it was straightforward and free - having first tried in Fortaleza where they were very obstructive - stick to your guns and insist that yes, it IS possible to extend it. Also do not leave it until the last moment to extend.

I know this is an old thread but was wondering if 90 day exension was granted. Also, my wife and I have a year visa here and wanted to know if it's possible to extend another 180 days after initial visa extension for vehicle.

Welcome to Horizons Unlimited, and good to hear about your travel plans. Yes, I was successful in getting my 90 days extension. But that was obviously a few years ago now, I know there are several people in Brazil at the moment including Harley Dan and there is a helpful local guy- Mario on the HUBB, maybe one of those will be able to give you up to date info. You might want to post this in the South American section of the HUBB as well.

Good luck with your trip- you are going to have such a great time in Brazil.

Hello

I entered Brazil some 10weeks ago and have maybe 3weeks left on my 90day visa. The bike was sold and then the guy dropped out and its cost me like 10weeks....arrrggggh - people eh?

Well, the bike is a Honda XR650L and registered in the US, l am a British citizen and living in London but the bike is in storage in Sao Paulo....

Can anyone offer advice how l can sell this bike without me being in Brazil....and getting the legal docs so the new owner can ride across the border without my company?

My thoughts.....

1) Get 90day visa extension with Brazilian Agency in London
2) Confirm best way to sell bike to none-US citizen and appropriate docs for them to drive back across the border...
3) Sell the bike to International traveller
4) Bike set-up in new name, title from USA and new number plate
5) Bike rides across to Uruguay or Paraguay
6A) London Embassy provide docs to allow bike out of country for new owner
6B) Worst-case, biker plays dumb and rides to border and with all new docs and title and claims the bike visa has been lost?

Obviously option B is risky - but l think if an international guy, non Brazilian is heading across the border with the licence plate, title that matches his/her passport and drivers licence - l cant see a problem.......after-all the bike is leaving the country and its a non Brazilian resident on the bike.......

Any thoughts would be seriously appreciated to my email....
