Extended storage for foreign bike in EU
 

Hi everyone,
I am a New Zealander arriving in France next week at the end of a trip across Russia and central European countries.

My intention was to store my DR650 in France for a year while I return home to NZ ... returning to France end 2011 to continue travels to South Africa.

I am advised a non EU registered motorcycle can only remain in an EU country for a maximum of 6 months.

Does anyone know a procedure to leave / store a foreign registered motorcycle in EU country?
Can motorcycle be temporarily imported or should I be storing bike in another country?

Since the EU doesn't record entry of vehicles you can keep it there indefinitely. I did.

I entered the EU on my bike at the end of June 2008, and kept it in the EU continuously until May 2010, when I went to Morocco. There was no paperwork (temporary imorts, etc.), and I never had any issues while riding in the EU (actually I was never stopped), and not an issue when I left the EU to go to Morocco.

I was concerned about the motorcycle EU entry stamp in my passport when I depart Europe for New Zealand....Motorcycle was stamped into Europe in Latvia when I exited Russia and out again when I left Hungary to enter Bosnia.....on return from Croatia motorcycle was stamped back into Hungary........

Just wondering what happens at London /Paris when I leave and passport stamp shows bike isn't leaving with me.. :confused1:

That's a new situation, didn't happen to me entering from Turkey. If you are already in France then all I can suggest is riding down to Andorra and try to get it stamped out of France there. Then go to Spain, which will not stamp your passport.

Failing that I think you may have a problem later on. Leaving the EU without your bike shouldn't be a problem, just tell them you will be back in a few months time, if anybody asks. In NZ you could get a new passport...
