In Ethiopia - with expiring rego and carnet - options?

I am currently in Ethiopia - on German ride out plates and ADAC carnet. It is now coming around to the year mark, and I very much want to continue my trip down to S. Africa.

It appears that there is not anyway to renew the German ride out rego and carnet from the info that I can ascertain.

To get Ethiopian rego, we need to be residents, pay 86% tax on the worth of the estimated value (read; what ever value they please), and then leave a bond in Ethiopia ($10,000) until the vehicle is returned to Ethiopia. Once the bike is registered in Ethiopia, it must be returned here to redeem the bond - it cannot be re-exported. Obviously this is not an option!!!!!

Anyone got any adivce re options with renewing German ride out rego/renewing the carnet/ temp rego within Germany from this distance? Any one know of any other options is terms of getting a legal carnet to be able to keep on riding for another year?

Hi Jandel,

I replied to your other post regarding the extension of your carnet. According to the ADAC this is possible.

Basically IMO a valid rego is not that important when travelling abroad. For us Germans the rego turns invalid after two years if the vehicle doesn't undergo the roadworthiness test, but obviously this cannot be done when outside the home country. More important is to have a valid insurance in case of an accident. And of course to have valid vehicle documents....
