Driver's license matching bike registration info

We're starting our RTW next fall in Austria and would like to buy new F650GS in Germany to save bike shipping costs from US. We've been told that border guards don't like to have passport info from one country and bike registration from another. Anybody have experiences that confirm or refute?

You may have to explain the situation from time to time.
I was once stopped in Spain and asked why my licence was British but my bike and insurance were French. I told him "because I live in France"
He accepted this.

Thinking about it, my passport has a different address to my Licence

Why not

Why not buy your new BMW over the internet, get the bill of sale, register the bike at home and get a plate to take with you for when you pick up the bike?

There might be a very good reason why this wouldn't work. I just don't see one at the moment.

You mean like the fact that you can't register your Euro-standard bike in the United States?

I have an Australian passport and have twice purchased bikes in the USA and ridden down to South America without any problems at borders. It really shouldn't be an issue.

I have a German passport and have travelled on bikes registered in NZ and France. Never had a problem. The bike & carnet must be in your name and that is important in some countries.

These guys were delivering a Landrover to South Africa for a customer and had a problem getting into Egypt with a Carnet that had a different name to the registration documents - www.exfoleyation.com

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
