Documents you wouldn't leave home without!
 

Just wanted to see a list of all the documents needed on a rtw trip. I listed a few that are important:

Carnet
Passport/Visa
Driver's License
Registration
Bike/Health Insurance paperwork
Vehicle title?

Copy of: Birth Certificate & Change of name deed (in my case)
Vehicle MOT if applicable, TUV in germany, ITV in Spain, whatever it is in other countries i dont know....
DEFINATELY vehicle title PLUS 4 or 5 good colour photocopies ( NEVER give the original out)

same with Drivers Licence GOOD colour copies for bent officials.

also get another passport, you can have 2, worth having a backup in case one gets lost or some official decides to keep yours.

definitely double up on passports and drivers licences, I took two passports, two UK licenses and two international drivers licenses. That way if you have to give up a license as security (e.g. for bent cop or hotel) you can just bugger off if they try and fleece you.

Dog tags with My name, Country of Origin, Passport No, DoB, Mums Contact Number

I never take them off when I'm travelling at least if I die or get hurt they can contact my folks and get me buried or treated, not like those poor folks in Thailand washed out to see for days nibbleb by fish and other small creatures then washed back inland all bloaty and unidentifiable. Buy some Dog Tags and at least give the folks at home some peace of mind, if you get lost/hurt or dead.

As well as carying a photocopy set, before you set off, scan all essential documents and Email them to yourself.

If the originals get stolen, lost or damaged you then can log on and print out copies at any Internet Cafe.

The printed out copies will make getting replacement documents a little easier at your Embassy etc.

They might help Police too - should they be in the least bit interested.

On the point of Police, when several countries away from home (and beyound the EU for me) I carry high quality colour photocopies of my Drivers Licence, Vehicle Owner document etc and laminate them - as they are done officially in some countries. Bent cops in faraway places will not know what they are looking at, but will hold them while he lets you go to a Bankomat/ATM for his bribe - or thats what he thinks!
Buy 2 or more International Driving Permits for he same reason. Also useful should one be endorsed with a Driving Ban in a country.

But by this, I am not advocating bad riding/driving or breaking of local traffic regulations or laws - just protecting myself and my journey should a problem arise.

Agree. Get good double sided photocopies done of the V5 (UK vehicle registration doc) (after detaching the second page with the info about selling the bike) and get it laminated!

So far that and the carnet have been the only docs I have needed

Tell them in the countries you expect to travel you havre to hand your passport over to hotel/ police etc and need another for if you are stopped when sight seeing etc......

Two Passports!
 

Hi, only business people from the UK can hold two UK passports at one time.
Reason; Countries hate countries. From experience, try getting a Pakistan visa while you have a Israel visa in passport! Try boarding a Kuwait airlines flight with an Israel visa! Hence reason for two passports.

Unless you can use the system to your advantage?

If not an international business person then some how get your work/company to say your trip is a business trip for them?

The advice line (Passport Agency UK 24hr help-line 08705210410) suggested that I apply for a new passport, including a cover note explaining what you are doing and hope for the best?

Thank you for your enquiry

The Identity and Passport Service will only issue second passports for
frequent business travel or frequent travel to incompatible countries.

To obtain a second passport your application must be supported by a
letter from your employer detailing the necessity for this passport. This
letter must be on company headed note paper.

You will need the following documents:

1. SE04 Application form completed in black ink, capital letters
2. Sections 1, 2,3,4,9 and 10 (Sections 5 and 7 if applicable) need to
be completed.
3. Section 10 must be completed.
4. 2 photographs on an off white/cream/light grey background. (one
certified at the back as a true likeness of applicant) and the other left
blank on the back. In order to comply with the present Photograph
Standards please carefully read the leaflet entitled Passport photographs
enclosed with your application form.
5. Name change document if name has changed.
6. Fee of £72
7. Current passport*
8. Birth Certificate (Full Birth Certificate if born after 01.01.83) if
your current passport is not available
9. Letter from employer stating the need for a second passport.

We would advise you not make any travel arrangements until you receive
your passport.


*If you are required to use your current passport for travel whilst you
are applying for a second passport you need not submit the same with
your application. Please enter your current passport number in section
3 of the form and give details in section 8 as to why your passport is
not available.

Alternatively you may enclose a separate letter detailing your current
passport number and why you are unable to submit the same.

That is a good question?
How would someone travel to Israel and other middle eastern countries without two passports? Does Israel have a ban on other countries listed on a passport?

Not even thought of going there or even enquired if they have a ban on any specific countries. I believe that if there be difficulties it is in other countries sooner than in Israel.

I am told they (Israel) are quite co-operative over the problem - to the point of not stamping your passport on entering (if you ask) but stamping a spare piece of paper that you keep within your passport unil leaving. Then you remove it.

If they are that understanding I doubt they would refuse you if you have some arab countrys' stamps in your passport. Probably depends on which countries.

Best to check with the local Embassy - if there is one!!

I guess depending on time and political situation airlines and countries have there moments and its joe public who gets it in the ass (me, some years ago) and more recently attempting to enter the states, and having Pakistan, Morroco and Egypt visa's in passport (had to get a new passport and no problem??) but it shows American suspicion.

I agree, that's by far the best advice! it makes things a lot easier sometimes.

..and for the israel question:

just tell your local office that is responsible for issuing passports, that you have been to Israel, that you now have an Israeli stamp in your passport and that you are planing to travel to Syria, Iran, Pakistan, etc. (basically all the countries that do not have signed any peace conventions with Israel so far) and then you should get a second passport, no problem. worked for me!
Since you can't enter these countries if they know that you have been to Isreal.
