Do I need to stay with the Carnet?
Hi,
I am trying to find out if I can do the following and not fall foul the carnet or passport control. I want to send my Range Rover out to Cape Town in a container. My friends will collect it at the dock and use it for a few months in SA. I will then fly out with my new wife for our honeymoon in zambia. We end up in SA. We will meet my friends and the Range Rover. We will then drive the Range Rover back to the UK. Prob via east side of Africa. ( not sure if she will leave me for a sane man at this point!) So can I obtain a carnet in the UK and have my friends clear the Range Rover out of the docks in SA and drive it north? Will this be allowed? Can he leave SA without the Range Rover if he wanted to? Can the Range Rover stay in SA without him or me? ie if we came back to the uk for 6 months and then flew back and completed the trip. Can a carnet be extended for more than a year? Thanks in advance. I have used a carnet before but over 10 years ago in Egypt. Cheers Ben |

I suppose if you friends are authorised by you this might be possible. But they will need to have the carnet document to present this to the customs officer, which will be filled out and stamped there.
Again, crossing a border will require an authorisation that this person is moving your vehicle whith your knowledge and permission. It would be best to clear this with the S.A. embassy in the UK. Additionally you could try to get some info from the South African AA. See their web site: Automobile Association Finally - according to the German AA, the ADAC, it is only possible to extend the carnet for a second year. Cross-check this with your local RAC. Besides that, not all countries need a carnet. Your RAC should have information on this issue available. Hans
