Destinations End - Morocco or Senegal?

Hi all,

I have been reading the threads with interest as I too am hoping to travel down to Morocco from the UK in April/May. The question I wish to pose is that of visa requirements post Morocco, namely Mauritania. I understand Senegal is good to go if your UK based, whilst Mauritania requires a visa, but can this be obtained at the border?

Also I'd be interested to meet any samaritans who would accept the torturous challenge of standing in as company with this lost soul.

I will be biking down, so bikes and cars are all good as its not the mode of transport that is of interest but rather the operaters and passangers.

Finally what Carnet is often pursued by staunch travellers, being a novice I am somewhat perplexed with the idea of stumping up a large security to be handed to the RAC, the bank gaurantee option appears more palletable.

Cheers in advance for all help.

I can see why you would look for accompaniement. And in the face of what's happening in other constituencies N. Africa could be a hot bed this year.

We are travelling to Morocco but not until late August. No further south.

Good luck in your travels and maybe we'll see you on the road.

Senegal is a long drive so I hope you've got the time! If you're riding from the UK you'll only be half way by the time you get to Morocco - and a lot of the second half is mostly empty. When you get there you've got to get back again - and the return trip is just as far.

It's not that I'm trying to put you off but despite everyone seeming to go down there on everything from unicycles to motorised rubbish skips it starts to become a serious trip once you get south of Agadir / Tan Tan / Layoune.

On the carnet front, most people seem to go down the insurance route. Last one I had ended up costing me somewhere around £200 when all the dust had settled.

Salute

Thanks everyone for you input, it has been much appreciated. Firstly, remember old is gold. Secondly, I wholly understand the fact that the journey post Morocco may pay little to no dividends and thus have decided to venture as far in as Morocco as possible without breaching any border southwards. Theres so much to do in Morocco and time is never on our side so the decision has been made.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
