STA Travel Insurance

I have just been advised by STA Travel, link from HU, that they DO NOT cover Motor Cycle Touring above 125cc. It is rather confusing as the list of items covered says

Adventure sports covered on premier only
Abseiling, American Football*, Archery, Ballooning, blah, blah, blah, Mopeds/Motorcycle Touring, Motorcycling up to 125cc where claims and conviction free for previous 3 years and where wearing a helmet, etc,etc.

The commer between Motorcycle Touring,, and Motorcycling upto 125etc is eronious. What they mean is any Motorcycling activity up to 125cc but exluding sports riding.

I have complained and they are amending their web page.

I therefore think, apart from our 4x4 members, this is a quite usless link for us 2 wheelers.

As posted by Del Boy, Endesleigh are quick and clued up when it comes to insurance.

Also nearly all of the others limit the period to 45,90 or 180 days a year max.

And the UK insurance trade try and tell us they are world leaders, get real.

I think that after I get back in a few years time, I will start a Two Wheeled Adventure Travelers Agency where you can fill in a form, leave the rest to us and hey presto all the paperwork, including visas, carnet etc, is sent to your door. For a small fee of course. If my experience is anything to go by, then the number of man hours being wasted by us surfing and sorting out this paperwork is huge.

All I want to do is get out there and ride my bike around the world

Maybe the government don't want you to leave, so make it hard for you

It is the same for travel insurance in Europe, you are limited to a set amount of days I wonder if the mainland Europeans (not us island dwellers) have these restrictions on their movements?:confused1:

I actually rang STA and got them to qualify the touring aspect, I see Grant has updated the page.

Try Worldwide Insure, great price as long as you are happy with the reduction in personal injury if injured on a bike.

The repatriation/medical at 10mill is excellent, however the wording suggests they will try not and repatriate you if possible, but if I am bent and twisted in a US hospital I am sure I can accept that.

I really think people need to be *very* wary of travel insurance policies for bike touring. Our normal one ,Kennet Insurance Brokers, who we have used for annual multi-trip for years as they side they covered riding motorbikes have now informed that that does not mean "touring". They then went on to say they could do us 3 months in the US for 450ukp, or 900ukp if using motorbikes.

They could not clarify if using bikes for a weekend in France with bikers constituted touring.

They no longer have our business

ebike give the full 12months cover throughout Europe as standard on their policies (and was cheaper by a long way)

Ebike don't do travel insurance, its motorcycle insurance they do; if you can call it that. Its fine if your bike is no more than 10 (maybe 12) years old, any older and they won't cover for Europe. Also they cover far fewer countries than almost any other insurer I researched. I had to move insurers from ebike to get cover for Eastern Wurope and Turkey; tehy couldn't even provide that. I'd say avoid them!!!

Try the long-term insurance through Lonely Planet: the world's best guidebooks, travel advice and information, they may cover motorcycling if they have different underwriters. I did go with STA, but am in a 4x4.

I've been ring around all day and their travel insurance allows riding a bike (no cc restriction) provided your license is valid in the country you're riding (presumably this means an International Driver's License + Full UK License is enough) and the Foreign Office hasn't blacklisted the country you're in.

Others will do it but they had worse policies and were more expensive.

Just tried renewing my cover with STA (having noted this thread) and they told me about the 125cc rule - so no go with them. But the guy at the other end of the phone also pointed out that the 125cc rule has always been in place -- meaning the £237 policy I took out with them last year was worthless to me.

When I bought the policy last year I was dealing -- by chance -- with a salesperson who has herself toured on a bike. She was interested to hear about the bike I was on. Hell, she's even got a traveller's blog on HU!! So there is *no way* she didn't know what kind of bike I was on.. looks like I was sold a pup.

I'm going to write to 'Customer services' to see what's what.

In the meantime, thanks to Stagbeetle's post, I called Endsleigh and got full cover for 30 quid less, and no problems regarding bike touring. Cheers Stagbeetle - and well done Endsleigh.

Now that is a good idea as I sure seem to be spending all my time on the laptop trying to sort the paperwork when I should be preparing the bike, packing the panniers, visiting the local ladies etc

... I just bought a 5 month travel insurance package from Endsleigh for my imminent StAm jaunt. Checked T&Cs both on the web-site and by phone. Roughly £50per month, global except US & Canada, and a good level of cover.

... No exclusions for motorcycling, no restriction by capacity, the only exception is for professional and competition riding.
