Chinese Burma border crossing issues

I post this thread assuming that i can get a carnet for mainland china.

Hello all,

I am planning a trip starting in Hong Kong, then through China, Burma, India, Bangladesh, Nepal then back in to China and then off to Europe. The Euro side is pretty much sorted, i am just needing a few confirmations regarding Chinese and Burma border crossings, or any other border/visa issues that i may come across. Any info will be helpful.

Thank you.

China is not a signatory to carnets. Legally, if you wish ride in China then you will need to obtain special permission to import your bike and ride it whilst escorted by a government representative - this is not inexpensive and will cost in the order of $500 daily, dependent on the number of riders.

The Burmese governement will ordinarily not allow vistors to cross land borders into their country, and ride within the country, either.

I have managed to (illegally) ride through China by purchasing a bike in the coutnry but was not able to export it - see Across the universe: The perils and frustrations of two wheels purchase in China.

This may give you some idea of what to expect.

Good luck. :mchappy:

might be an idea to do some research first, and not assume anything.

Good news is you´ve already found one of the best websites to do just that.

:welcome: to the HUBB.

As said before don't assume anything. Especially where communist/ex-soviet countries are concerned.

IMHO if you're wanting to overland with your own vehicle then you can forget China and Burma, save your nerves and money and travel in other countries.

As mentioned above, China and Burma are barriers that are either very expensive or not possible to reasonably consider. If you are starting in HK, I think you might as well either sea freight your bike to India or Vladivostok and start the ride to Europe from either of those

Burma.

I spent a month in Burma in 2009. It is the most incredible place I have ever been ( and I've been to a few places). The people, regardless of the fact that they live in poverty under a regime of criminals and murderers, are the most welcoming I have ever met. It,s out there all right but you will NEVER get across the Sino-Burmese border. Not on a bike, not without a bike no way ever.
Ride your bike to Bangkok (assuming you get through China with it) leave it there for a month and fly into Rangoon. Visa twenty bucks two days. Don't miss the opportunity to go but completely dismiss any thought of riding there. Stay safe.:welcome:
