Cheap motorcycle insurance for Argentina (and other MercoSur countries)

I had a hell of a time tracking down reliable information on where to obtain insurance for Argentina after arriving yesterday from Chile. I never did purchase insurance in Chile because I couldn´t get an answer as to whether or not it was actually required. I ended up not buying it and was never asked. I do know for a fact though that insurance (seguro) is required in Argentina, Colombia, and Peru. The insurance I ended up buying covers all of the mentioned countries (I believe, but ask when buying just to be certain).

I left Osorno, Chile and took the route that brought me into Bariloche, Argentina. I was not asked for proof of insurance at the border and I also did not see anyone selling any at the border crossing. Immediately upon reaching Bariloche I started searching for insurance because I do not need to give the already corrupt police here in Argentina another reason to hit me up for a bribe.

Anyways, it turns out that most insurance companies are not able to sell insurance unless your motorcycle is registered in Argentina or you are an Argentinian citizen. Eventually using the HUBB forum I found a company called ATM in Buenos Aires, called them but since I was not in B. Aires they couldn´t directly issue me the insurance, but they quoted me a price of 60 pesos for one month of coverage which is significantly cheaper than all other places that I checked (because they deal strictly with motorcycles). They also gave me the name of the office in Bariloche to buy the insurance. The office is co-located with Zanella Patagonia motorcycle shop. The information on google maps is wrong so below is the correct address and telephone number. By the way, when I arrived at Zanella the insurance only ended up costing me 48 pesos! Thats $12 USD for one month. Not bad. They also speak English at the Bariloche office. It took about 5 minutes to get in and out. The insurance covers the other persons injuries and damage to their automobile. Does not cover you or your motorcycle.

When you get your insurance at the ATM office it is most important to tell them that you also need full Mercusor? cover, this is a green form with all of the countries covered listed on it and costs no more. The plastic card that ATM gives you is only valid in Argentina. Ride safe.

Thanks to the OP for the post, and accurate info.

Information still accurate today, and is 66 pesos for 30 days. Still spoke English.

still accurate!

I was not asked for insurance going via Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass (Osorno - Bariloche). There were however a lot of police checkpoints into Bariloche, I was not stopped.

Zanella were friendly and efficient. I purchased 6 months for 432Peso (72 Peso per month). They are a bike shop too btw!

Thanks to OP :-)

Hello all-

We will be crossing from Bolivia (Villazon) to Argentina next week and cannot get a straight answer about where to buy it. I see the information above but it still looks vague. Any suggestions with specifics are appreciated.

Thanks,

-Terry

Hi Terry,

You could send ATM Seguros an email to info@atmseguros.com.ar

I just did, I'll let you know when I get an answer. Their insurance is also valid in adjacent countries and Peru, but you have to request this to them as I think they will give you a more detailed certificate.

Cheers,
Leo

Ok, I never heard back from ATM but was able to ask some motorcyclists that we met here in Tarija Bolivia. They sent me to the following place of which I now have 6 months of required liability insurance for $50US that covers Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, & Uraguay.

Here's the contact information.

GPS: -21.536305 -64.7282

Cell # of the agent we worked with:

And full contacts and address in Tarija Bolivia:

Buying Seguros in Cochrane

We tried to cross into Argentina through Paso Roballos (just north of Cochrane) but were turned around because we didn't have insurance. No they wouldn't accept my StateFarm insurance(si es para todos paises...), and no we couldn't pass through and buy insurance in Argentina. I had tried before hand to purchase it online on several websites and in person, but this wasn't possible with a non-Chilean bike. After several hours in the Chilean Caribineros office searching online we gave up and drove back to Cochrane.

Today I was able to locate a vendor in the Plaza de Armas in Cochrane, called PC Soluciones. A small wooden building in the South East corner of the plaza.
After about 5 minutes I walked out with my insurance. Not too cheap, 19,000CP for 10 days.

Just an FYI for anybody passing this way...

Onward!!

Just digging this up... We were passing through Paso Roballos direction Argentina and no one ever asked us for insurance. Two Chile registered bikes. I really recommend this pass, marvelous.

Got asked for insurance papers at the Villazon/La Quiaca border passing into Argentina from Bolivia in 2019. Got ours through a guy in Salta via Watsapp, but he indicated that he was fed up with dealing with dickheads who chiselled him on price or didn't want to supply pics of their credit cards so he didn't suffer charge backs.
