Carnet"; What's it all about???????????
 

I understand the basics of the carnet, but does anyone know of any good websites that explain it further. Or more to the point have some kind of calculator which will work out the costs for you, KISS rule here eh. never had to get one before so its all new to me.

Ok, here's some KISS for you. Based on my experience over the years, carnet deposit = 150% of value of vehicle refundable once carnet returned, admin costs approx $150.

Alternative to deposit is to pay non-refundable insurance of around 10-15%. Insurance only available in some countries in Europe to the best of my knowledge.

Hi Garry- you're on the right website. On the tabs to left, under Planning, click on "Paperwork." Then scroll down and you'll find plenty of info on carnets, who issues them, what countries require them, etc. Different issuers use different formulas. ADAC, the German auto club, was a joy to work with. The Canadian auto club was more difficult. It pays to shop around. Hook.

I used the form there for my carnet application and it was a piece of p#ss . All I did was take the form to the RACQ in Queensland and pay the bucks. Three days later I had my carnet.:mchappy:All the costs are explained in the form that you download. Be careful if you are thinking of getting a bank guarantee though. I found the insurance option the cheaper one. My local motorcycle dealer gave me a "good" valuation for my bike.

Go to the NRMA .. the local branch may not know about it .. but they can ring someone to find out .. they can then orgainise posting it out to you ... but it will take some 2 weeks to have it done .. it can be dated to start from some future date .. so you can organise most of it well before you leave. You can also go to the branch that actually does the work .. umm Strathfield? That way you get to talk to the people doing the stuff? They don't do stuff in 3 days .. as I say weeks is more the thing...
I found a bank garrentte thingy .. you put money in a special account (it will earn intrest that you get thius way) .. you only get the money back when the carnet is dealt with .. This is less costly than the insurance .. and gives you intrest on the money rather than just giving them the money and letting them keep the intrest ..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Frank but it took three days for mine to arrive. I walked into the RACQ on a Tuesday afternoon with my application form and picked up the carnet on the Friday.Pepina Sorbana at the AAA in Canberra did a fantastic job.

I found the bank guarantee more expensive probably due to the value of my bike and which countries I am travelling to. My bank wanted me to deposit the full amount then wanted to charge me 5% as well as a $250 establishment fee
