Carnet UK-SA for a kiwi, on a UK bike.

basicaly i think the title says it all.

I'm a New Zealander in the UK, I have a UK motorbike licence, and am planning on riding my bike south to south africa, then shipping it to new zealand - where i will stay, with it.

is this possible, I have read on the RAC website that I need to get a carnet from my country of residence, but on the AA nz website my bike needs to be registered in new zealand...

my thought might be that i have to 'import' my bike to nz while I am still here, get plates etc sent over somehow, and then ride it south 'returning' it to new zealand at the end of the trip...

but im sure someone here will have a bit more know how than i do.

Contact Paul Gowen at the RAC and ask. If the RAC can't do it then try the Swiss AA, details were posted elsewhere.

It's very easy to import a bike into NZ, but the bike has to physically be here to get the VIN number plate fitted and rego number plate. All up cost is about NZ$400.

Hi Tom,

The carnet is associated with the bike and it's owner but mainly the bike. So as it's a UK bike you should get the UK RAC Carnet. Further more, like it or not, you are currently resident in the UK, in a bar in Shepherds Bush maybe (then again you guys have all headed up to Scotland I hear), and not NZ so you need to get a UK carnet. Have a chat to Paul Gowen (very busy man) at the RAC about it. He is THE person in the UK who issues carnets. He is exceptionally helpful.

Check up on the various threads about the option of financing the carnet (via Egypt 800% for UK bikes) eg cash deposit, bank guarantee, surety. I recall adding something to a long thread about carnets early last year sometime.

Good luck

Hi Tom

I just picked up this thread & note you have sent me an email re. carnet issue.

I have been out of office since 4 Dec. & return on Thursday 11 Dec. following a house move so am anticipating a few emails to plough through :-(

In the circumstances, you have described, I confirm we will issue a carnet to you on a GB registered bike, even though you are a Kiwi ! BTW.. my thanks to one of my agents "Bossies" for the comments & issue confirmation, etc :-)

Rather than me responding to your initial email on return, please call me on 01454 208304 from late morning Thursday & pleased then to talk through fees, issue process. We generally ask for about 1 months notice, so in the meantime I suggest you go to RAC website & download carnet application & complete especially, if you plan to leave in early 2009.

I should add that I prefer initial contact by telephone to email.. you will get a faster response & answers to questions ( particularly if you have a few) !!

Thanks

Paul

Thanks Paul, I will get in touch with you either thursday or early friday.

Still looking at routes, and tyres, and coming to grips with how to make best use of this fine website, all the information is here, somewhere.

I'll get a move on trying to find out whats needed.

Regards

Tom Tyer-Drake
