Carnet - UK passport, US bike...
 

I have a Uk passport but will be buying my bike in Alaska. I know I don't need a Carnet for the Americas but intend to head on to Africa. My question is, do I get my Carnet here in Britain, or in the US? I've written to the RAC but haven't heard yet.

My vehicle is not registered in UK - can RAC still issue a carnet to me ?
RAC can issue a carnet to a UK, Channel Islands or Irish registered vehicle. For vehicles registered in other EU/overseas countries, application should be made to the national motoring authority of that country. RAC can advise.

If the bike is purchased and registered in Alaska, normally the Carnet issuing authority (for any USA or CND registered vehicle) is the Canadian Automobile Assn, Carnet de Passages en Douane - Canadian Automobile Association | Association canadienne des automobilistes.

But you should also wait to hear from RAC. With a UK passport, and if you do not intend to (ever) return the bike back to the US, RAC or CAA may have to give you "special" advice.

I emailed the CAA and they said they couldn't do anything! They said - ("It appeared to me that the motorbike you bought is for personal use and that you are a UK citizen, we will not be in a position to issue a ATA Carnet to you. ATA Carnets are issued for commercial purposes. For U.S. issued Carnets, the Holder of the Carnet must be a U.S. entity.) Not quite sure what this means.

This whole thing is really starting to piss me off . I just want to ride a bike around the world - WHY is everyone making it so hard for me!!!!!:confused1:

You got the wrong person. You don't want an ATA carnet, you want a "Carnet de Passages en Douanes", which is for any old body. Try again and spell it out.

Yeah, sorry. I spoke to Suzanne at the Canadain AA and they can help me out. i then got a nice email from the RAc and he said he could help me out too. So, it looks like the world is a wonderful place and I'm all set to go.

Could you be a bit more precise ?
Does the above mean that CAA/ Suzanne says CAA can issue a Carnet to you as a UK citizen with a vehicle registered in USA...even if the vehicle does not return to USA ?
Likewise: does this mean RAC will issue a Carnet to you as a UK citizen with a vehicle registered in USA?

Yes, both (or either). The CAA will be able to issue me (a UK citizen) with a carnet for a US registered bike. All I do when I finish my trip in the UK is send the paperwork to Canada and they will reinburse me. This is what she said " You will have to get the customs of the UK to stamp the last page of the carnet when you get back to the UK with your bike, then you will return your carnet to us and we will return your financial guarantee."

Likewise the RAC here in the Uk has said that they can help me and can issue me with a carnet for a bike registered in the US.
