Carnet Swap/Renewal - South Africa - Cape Town.

Just a note on our experience.

You may have seen the other thread about getting a new carnet. Well thats your first problem. Get one.

So now you have an old expiring carnet and a new one running from when the old one expires. How do you get them swapped over without driving out of the SACU. Well as it turns out it was pretty easy. We did it before the new one came into affect (old expires 31st and we did on the 22nd with the new one being valid from the 31st but stamped "in" on the 22nd also. So done early. No problem there.)

Go to the new customs house in Cape Town CBD. You can see it from the old one next to the port which is in T4A. The guards will point you at the right building. You can park in town on the side of the road for 11rand an hour.
Its here.

17 Lower Long Street
Cape Town
8001

Go into the little customer interface office and ask at the counter for the "carnet guy". They will shuffle you to a private booth. Explain you have a carnet thats about to expire and you need the old one stamped out and the new one stamped in, its an foreign car etc.... The guy should understand and stamp them all as you've probably seen many times. He needs to return all the parts to Pretoria (get him to make you some copies of the old detached folio and the new one). Make sure he puts a note on all the parts with the replacement (or replaced) carnet numbers. He knows what he's doing, mostly.

Return your old carnet to the RAC at the DHL office down the road at Number 2 Lower Loop Street. If you walk up the hill from the customs office there is a copy shop to get the old carnet copied just in case before you go to DHL.

Job done. 2 hours max.

Thanks for the write up, just one question. I won't be able to get to a customs house till Monday and the old carnet expires on a Sunday, (plane arrives Friday late). I have the new one and can make a run to the border Sunday (would be a long ride) if I need do. Any idea if I am going to be in trouble if the carnet expired the day before I get to customs house.
Also need to know location of Customs House in Johannesburg.

Swapping carnets in Namibia

Similar story to Neill - we're in Windhoek with the new carnet being dated the day after the old one expired.

It's easy to do - just make sure you do it before the old carnet expires as they may refuse to stamp it (they did this to the guy in front of me).
Go to Voigt Strasse in Windhoek - opposite the Post Office there's a low nondescript white building - it's marked "Customs/Ministry of Finance" or something like that.
On entering turn left down the corridor, first (only?) door on the left is where you'll find the guy. (all the ladies at the entrance were very helpful and smiling, so no problem to ask).
Show him both carnets, explain what you want to do and he'll sort it all out for you in a few minutes. Make sure you take your vehicle as he will want to check the chassis number (and engine number if it's not a Unimog with the specially hidden numbers!).

It took me all of 5 minutes.....(after having worried about it for 2 months and received countless different versions of how to go about the process)
