Carnet returned - lost by post
 

Hi there,

I posted my completed Carnet from Germany to Australia as recorded mail. Unfortunately it seems like it has been lost.
I have already sent an enquiry to the German Post, but it will take a few weeks and probably wont be successful anyway...

Has this happened to anyone before? How can I get my deposit back?

I did scan the Carnet before I sent it, but unluckily I cannot find them anymore.

I still have a photocopy of the German customs duty invoices (originals were sent with the carnet). This proofs that my motorcycle has been imported to Germany.
Would this be sufficient?

If you can proof where the bike is now (legaly imported into germany) it cant be somewhere else so you should get your deposit back. I think it should work this way...


Edit: after talking to the ADAC they told me if the original carned cant be returned they have to wait until it has expired.

Thats the onely difference if your mail got lost.

With or without original carned de passage afterwards you have to proof that the bike is somewhere legaly imported (or returned back home) to get your deposit back (usuarly last page).

If you cant proof this (because the bike got stolen etc) they wait up to 6 Years if any country claims the iport tax (thats why they allways keep a little part of the carned if you enter) before they return your deposit. If they have to pay import tax (if you dont have the export stamp of this country or cant proof that the bike is somewhere else) and your deposit was to low they might even ask you for more money...

When you sent the document by recorded mail, did you declare the value of the document as the value of what it could potentially cost to resolve?

Well, If I would have declared the actual value for the recorded mail the postage would have been ridiculously high. The standard liability is only about 35 EUR.
I never had any mail lost...

I once had an issue to get the CdP deposit with Touring Club Suisse (Carnet stamped but vehicle not back, so they doubted about possible requests). We ended up asking directly to AIT (Alliance Internationale du Tourisme, the CdP issuer) and FIA and they were very kind and helpful.
