Carnet renewal and temp leaving country without bike
 

Hello all,

Had been planning a long trip with no real time limits. Am based in the UK but am planning to go to Eastern Europe (Czech R or Hungary) to do some teaching English for a couple of years. Prior, during and/or post this I would take my bike on through the Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Iran etc) and then perhaps on to India, N.Africa or back to Europe.

How long do carnets last for and what is the procedure/cost for renewals and their time scale?

Can I base myself in a country but then leave the bike there to do travelling in countries without it (for example a flight out to friends in Taiwan)?

Hi Ross,

Carnets are generally issued for one year. You can extend them, but generally only for one more year, but that depends on the issuer. Cost of renewal is usually the same as original issue (ie about £75/80 in the UK).


You can leave your bike in a country as long as the carnet's still valid. However, some countries issue their own temporary import licence which has a limited lifetime. For example, Thailand issue an import licence which lasts only 30 days.
