Carnet renewal pickle Thailand/ Malaysia

Hi there,

We're in a bit of a pickle trying to renew our aussie Carnet. The aussie AA have been telling us that we can renew our carnet in Thailand but after 3 days running around Bangkok we've found that we can't. The RAAT reckon that they don't have authority, and suggest that we go to Malaysia.

The aussie AA can't renew the carnet by post as the bike has to be present for customs to give it a high five...

So we're off to Malaysia, which brings me to my question... Has anyone gone through the Carnet renewal in Malaysia before? If so, how long did it take, and do you know whether we can go to any AA office or whether we have to get to KL?

Cheers for any help.

Seriously need

I renewed my carnet when I was in Australia in 2011 through the RAAC (Auto Club) but I had the assistance of my customs broker (have a big Unimog camper), for another year. Don't know if more than 1 more year is possible.
It did not need another customs inspection, it was in storage at a friend's house in Victoria when I did it and it entered Aust. in Brisbane the previous year.

Thanks guys, we're sorted! phew!

For anyone else who's looking to renew a Carent in this area here's what we've found out...

You cannot renew by sending your Carnet back to the original issuer (in our case the Aus AA) as your bike needs to be present. The Aus AA said there was no way they could renew the CDP for us unless the bike was in oz..

Thailand RAAT, although very friendly, say they do not have the authority to renew CDP, despite being listed by the international body as being able to. Australia AA reckon they've done one renewal of a CDP in the last 12 months, however think maybe there's be a legislative change.

Malaysia AA have renewed our carnet today, same day, easy as. You have to go to their head office in KL, in person, and with the bike. We had to pay the same cost of our carnet through the Australian AA (the original issuers) and an additional 500RM to the malaysian AA.
