carnet for overlandtravel from india or nepal to austria
 

gentlemen,

you may call be a fool, cause the forums are full of hints for getting a carnet de passages. but in general i do not find the right entry to start my carnet challenge. it drives me crazy!

my plan is to buy a used enfield in india or nepal and ride it overland via pakistan, iran and turkey into the EU and home to austria. this enfield will be a used one and will be imported to austria to get a valid license for use on our roads. i contacted ADAC and ÖAMTC, the AACs for austria and germany but got a rejection for my plans. in both cases the vehicle must own an austrian or german license plate. but how the hell should this become true on an official way???

is anybody out there who did the same thing before within the last 2 years or better, is any austrian guy out there who did the same thing?
can anybody give me a hint?
(maybe somebody plans a similar trip and would like to join me for parts of the trip. planning to start somewhen beginning of august and should last at least 2 months.)

The carnet is issued by the country where the vehicle is registered.

See the bit on Indian Bullets and carnets .. it is somewhere on the carnet page I think .. basically cannot be done. Maybe possible with a Nepal registered Indian Bullet.. but they may be all sold now ?

Once you get it home you will need to

pay customs duty to your government ... that will then release the carnet so you can return it to where it was issued.

Get the bike registered (or put it on the mantelpiece!) .. this may be difficult.

I believe I can help you there. I am in India, have bought an Enfield and did intend to ride it back to Ireland.

The AA in Ireland no longer issue the Carnet de Passage unless the bike is registered in Ireland. They told me to try the RAC..

The RAC in the UK sent me this which I'm sure you have seen already..

In June 2002 we were advised by the AIT in Geneva who administer the carnet scheme worldwide, that according to Indian legislation, only those
persons resident in India with proof of residence are eligible to purchase & register vehicles in their name. Individuals who have purchased/registered
motorcycles in the past have done so illegally & may be held liable under Indian law.

Issuing clubs were advised that under no circumstances can a carnet be issued outside India for a vehicle purchased in India bearing Indian registration plates.

However; the RAC have personally told me that if I had a bike which was registered in Nepal they would have issued me a Carnet de Passage for the trip.

As it is I am trying to see if I can a: get the bike shipped to Istanbul and ride it back from there or b: get it re-registered in Nepal.

If I find out any more I'll let you know. Good luck.

a: above is probably possible, b: is unlikely. Best to start with a Nepali registered bike.
