Carnet or Insurrance in Africa..

Hey Guys,

Im a 24 year old californian living in Madrid. Im planning on buying a car in belgium and crossing it over to africa. Im planning a route now. im thinking of crossing into Morrocco and down the west coast to Senegal.

The Carnet is something i read about in some of the threads. Is this particular to the bikes only or is it necessary for cars? It acts like a Passport for the car right?

Also when you cross into africa is it necessary to have insurrance on the vehicle or is this just a personal preferance?

I know this is a motorcycle site but i would imagine that some of the same rules would apply equaly to cars... no?

As far as Carnets go, the same rules apply to bikes as to cars. You'll need a Carnet for many countries in Africa.

Yes, a carnet is basically a passport for your vehicle. You put a substantial deposit down on the document (depending on the value of your vehicle and the country you want to visit). That deposit guarantee's you won't import the car, sell it and leave the country without paying taxes.

Loads of info on this site regarding carnets. Contact your Automobile Club for details.
