How much for the carnet

I am planning my trip RTW and now the question of the price of the carnet arrised, some talk about insurance ?some said 200% or more of vehicule price, is that when bouth new, can we buy a used with a very low price... any advice welcome.

I didn't travel to africa since many years so updated infos will be a must.

You may need to call the CAA tel number listed to clarify exactly how much a specific bike on a specific itinerary will cost.

Thanks for the reply , its pretty tough to get an idea of what the price will be as they don't really say much on the website. Last time I crossed Africa was on an old air head ,I now hae a much more expensive bike so I need to see if they have any clue before I aply.

Hendi, it's all dependent on value of bike AND WHICH COUNTRY you want to go to. Talk to Suzanne at the CAA - she's very helpful. Also of course do read the carnet page in the menu at left, under paperwork.

Thanks for the name ,I will call her. I am planning a RTW and the BMW that I have will really cost me a lot if I had to put 3 to 4 time the price I paid for . I was maybe thinking of buying a used cheaper bike to do the trip..some bikes can be bought use for a very low declare value...
I just didn't know if the value was the actual value or the purchase value.

I have a California registered bike, in Australia, with a Canadian carnet that I tried to ship to India. No luck. Too many countries involved. It could still be done but it was straining friendships and better an Enfield and friends, then a Ducati and no friends.

Suzanne is very helpful. I think it's cheaper to buy a bike instead of ship a bike with a carnet. Of course, I'll be in your shoes if I decide to ride to Argentina then ship my bike to South Africa on my next leg.

Thanks for the reply Dave,I was in india for two month this years and I know that the paperwork is tidius overthere.I plan to ride CA to SA then ship the bike to France or Africa and continue my ride.I prefer to ride my own bike in Africa as buying there for a good motorcycle to ride 2 up maybe be a big pain in the neck.
