Carnet or Import
Hi all,
Im new to this site and have been reading up lot about the Carnet (which is a little confusing but seems ok). My question is that I am planning on doing a ride one day (hopefully soon) from London back to South Africa where my bike will stay for good. what is the easiest way of doing this? Do i get a Carnet before I go and once in SA go through the import process? I understand that a Carnet is usefull for getting through boarders in Africa although not all African countries requier them. If anyone has done this before and knows whats best then all suggestions are welcome. Currently im on a Africa Twin, UK registered. Many Thanks OlympicBrett

Get the Carnet! Don't worry whether it's needed or not. Rather have it and pay the cash than not have it and get stuck with some obstropulous (not actually a word, but you get my meaning) border official in Africa.  Zero fun....You need to fill in the permanent export item on your registration document and send it to the DVLA, who will send you a confirmation back.
