Hi Geoffrey, and welcome to the HUBB!

Quote:
<font face="" size="2">"For bikes taken specifically only to Australia or New Zealand, 'tourist' vehicle entry procedures are relatively straightforward and not time consuming; it is usually easier and less costly to apply directly for Australian or New Zealand Customs clearance, and pay their vehicle import and sales taxes (OZ = 26.4%; NZ = 12.5%, refundable when the bike is re-exported/shipped home), rather than apply for a Carnet from the CAA." </font>
For more info, see the info on New Zealand on the Carnet de Passage page.

Note that there is a lot of planning info on the website itself, check the menus to the left of every page. You'll probably find lots of answers to your questions!

As far as I know, the nationality of the bike or its owner has nothing to do with entry and temporary import procedures for either Australia or NZ. So, this answer will apply to UK, Canadian, US, South African etc. bikes. The only exception may be for Australian bikes to NZ and vice versa, but I'm not certain that makes any difference.

See the info about Australia on the Carnet de Passage page (left menu - Trip Planning\Paperwork\Carnet de Passage) or follow this link.

It's not good news. Australia has been tightening their entry requirements for years, and if you don't have a carnet, you must obtain a Vehicle Import Approval in advance of arrival in Australia. You will also need to deposit with Australia Customs cash or bank security equivalent to the duty + GST which would be payable if you sold the bike (26.4% of the value of the bike). This would of course be refundable when you leave the country with the bike.

Good luck with your travel plans, and please let us know about your experience in Australia for the benefit of future travellers.

Susan

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
