Carnet - How low can you go?

Hi all,
It's getting into the final few months before my sister and i head off on our Cape to Cape trip.
It's almost time for me to start Carnet applications etc.
So.....does anyone have any idea how low I can realistically value our old 60 series landcruiser?

1989, 4L non turbo, 140,000 miles, superficially pretty rusty and the body work generally looks very rough (mechanically she's mint, and rock solid where it matters, but they're not to know that I guess)

£1000?
Or even lower....£800?

I really have no idea what the book price would be these days.
With Egypt on the Carnet, every £100 less on the value will make all the difference to us.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Happy travels
Sam

Phone Paul Gowen and ask him what he thinks. He is a very reasonable guy and will advise you on what you can get away with.

LC's still go for reasonable money in North/West Africa so you only problem may be the Egyptian authorities not 'believing' the low cost on the Carnet.

Talk it through with Paul and see what he says (then let us know :) ).

Thanks Griffdowg, will do.
I spoke to Paul about something else just over a year ago and can confirm he was very helpfull indeed.
I am hoping to have my act together as much as possible before taking up any of his time as I know how busy he is.
I'll give him a shout this week and see what he thinks.

Cheers

Hi all,
Just thought I'd post what I picked up from talking to RAC Carnet dept today.
It sounds like Paul Gowan has been moved on, I spoke to a lady called Jessica who said he was working on 'another project' these days.
Jessica was spot on, really helpful.

In terms of valuations, £1000 is the lowest they can declare for any vehicle.
So for me, looks like £1000 it is then!

Happy travels

No, I spoke to Paul yesterday and my carnet arrived on my doorstep today. It is a busy thing the carnet department, there are a few other staff working in his team.

I think Paul's head may explode if he had to deal with all the carnet administration himself!

I think they also go lower than £1000, maybe they were referring to 4 wheeled vehicles, as I expect Ed's C90 wasn't valued at a grand!

Welcome to my C90 Adventures

Ok, thanks guys.
As I said Jessica was great, but did definitely say everything I posted.
I'll try again to catch Paul to double check the valuation side of it, I can't see a garage paying more than £800 if I rocked up wanting to get rid of the beast.....Priceless to me, but she's no looker:thumbup1:

£1000 it is then

Hi all,
In case anyone's interested i got approival for a £1000 valuation today.
They were initially sceptical over the phone, suspecting i was under valuing it too much.
I sent in half a dozen supporting photos showing some superficial rust and bodywork damage, this did the trick perfectly.
They even expressed some concern about me taking such an old banger on a trip!
:innocent:
