Carnet for Egypt ?

Carnet for Egypt? I've seen the posting where a rider in July had an expensive lesson..but I'm still hoping to get in without a carnet ~ what is the current position ?

A carnet is required for Egypt. Don't even think of trying without it. The border crossing formalities WITH a carnet is a huge pain in the ass as it is, without trying to do it without a carnet. They know what it is - and they want it.

They have a very large compound in Cairo - full of expensive Range Rovers, Rolls Royces, and plain ordinary cars. They told me when I asked that they were all permanently impounded, primarily because of a problem at the border, or they stayed in the country too long without paying taxes.

There would be a sale of them all eventually, probably to someone with the right connections.

I think that even if you did get in somehow, you still have to get out. And that's just as hard or harder.

Make sure your carnet covers you for Egypt if you're going trans-Africa. I just got an 'Africa wide' carnet and it specificially excludes Egypt, don't know why.

Curiously done, but it's probably because Egypt's tax/duty rates are higher than anyone else's, so the price for the carnet would be higher.

They should have told you. Where did you get it from?

From the RAC in the UK. To be fair to them they did ask which countries I'd be travelling through (Egypt isn't one of them) but I thought Kenya had the highest import duty rate in Africa so if you were covered for there you'd be covered for the whole continent.

I just checked with the Dutch organisation that provides carnets. Wherever a carnet is required in Africa the required deposit is 100% of the current value of the vehicle. Except in Egypt, here it is 0,75 x 90% of the new value in the year of putting it on the road.
In Morocco and Algeria a carnet is not required.
