Carnet for Cameroon

We are planning a trans-Sahara trip terminating in Cameroon and plan to enter Cameroon through Chad using the border crossing close to N'Djamena. Some questions about the paperwork:

- Does anyone know for sure if a carnet is required to enter Cameroon with a Dutch-registered car?

- If a carnet is not needed, what vehicle formalities have to be done at the border? Insurance? Local carnet?

- Can visa for Cameroon be arranged at the border or in N'Djamena? Any special papers needed to obtain the visa (such as invite letter/booking form etc)?

Any information that you have regarding this border crossing will be greatly appreciated!

Your first move should be to contact the Automobile Association of the Netherlands about the carnet. The second move: to contact the embassy of Cameroon for visa requirements. In 2000 Cameroon was the only country that required proof of liability insurance before issuing a visa to enter overland with one's own vehicle. In 2000 visas could not be obtained at the border. But check, conditions change continuously.

I had a Carnet, but there was a German that enterred Cameroon without a Carnet.

You can't get visa at the border. I tried, was not allowed in Cameroon, and stamped out of Nigeria... .

Robbert,

I'm planning on going from Nigeria through Cameroun to Chad, in the very north, in the next few weeks. I have read that you can get transit visas issued on the border. Are you saying that you couldn't get through Cameroun at all? When was this?

cheers,
Doug
