Carnet = Fly in the ointment!

Hi, I'm planning to go RTW beginning next year(fingers crossed!). The route I'd like to take is to fly myself & the bike to Canada and spend th first year making my way through the Americas to Buenos Aires. From BA I plan to fly to Australia and spend the next 18 months or so meandering through Asia,Africa and Europe. A major fly in the ointment is the dreaded "C-word"-Carnet!
For the first year I'll be travelling through countries that don't require one but from then on it will be necessary. So my question is- can I apply for a carnet before leaving that does not become effective for 12 months, or will I have to reverse my route?
Cheers Derek.

You should be able to arrange the carnet by e-mail and post. No need to get it in advance.

since your taking so long to do the trip, i think your best bet would be to talk to paul gowan at the r.a.c and explain the situation. find out where you need your carnet to start. send him your carnet application but leave out the dates, a photo copy of your passport and v5 vehicle docs. it takes about a month to process the carnet so when you are prity shore the date your gonna hit the first country you need the carnet, get him to send it to a hotel ahead of you.
Not to sure if the carnet lasts for 2-3 years. best give him a call, he's the man in the know.
His number is 01454 208000 or www.pkgowen@rac.co.uk
he does sometimes take a while to get back to you.

Hope this helps you out.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
