Carnet de Passage necessary to ship OUT of Argentina??

After searching the HUBB, it seems that neither a Carnet nor a libreta is necessary to travel in S. America. However, Grant Johnson mentioned that a Carnet is needed to ship INTO Argentina. My plans are to ship from Dallas into Peru (Feb. 07) and OUT of BosAs to Dallas (May 07). Will I need a Carnet or libreta? A prospective shipping company, BDP international suggests I get a Carnet.

Also, any recomendations on insurance for South America? One of the complications is that my bike (1981 R80G/S) is older than 20 ys. and difficult to get insured.

Thanks for the help-

Marcus

Marcus, I shipped my bike from Buenos Aires, Argentina to South Africa without a carnet. I had the carnet mailed to South Africa. When the carnet arrived in Capetown, I went to the airport and received the bike from customs- it only took about 20 minutes.

No Carnet, No libretta

Hi marcus,

Hook is correct. No carnet or Libreta is needed in entire South-america.
Only Ecuador is a bit behind. You don't need it, but not all customs officers know this.

Arentina is "no problemo amigo"

Have fun

Marcus

err, that was 1997 - things have changed - NO carnet required at all for all of the Americas.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the help. Sorry, Grant, I overlooked the one of the most important parts of your posting- THE DATE.

It is sad...

It is sad that the "official" web site isn't up to date.

COUNTRIES IN WHICH THE CPD IS REQUIRED (1)
AMERICA
Argentina, Brazil (3), Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dutch Antilles, Ecuador, Jamaica, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela.

3) In Brazil, the CPD is not required for vehicles entering by land routes, but it is required for vehicles arriving by boat.

Maybe the most important on the official web site need to be showed in red and in bigger fonts:

“This list may contain errors due to changes in national legislation.”

This issue was long treated in the HUBB: YOU DON’T NEED IT in any way and in ALL SOUTH AMERICA…..
