Carnet Confusion
 

Well I have read every posting on the Carnet and I think I have completely confused myslef.
I am an american and in April starting my first RTW trip.
My itenerary is
San Francisco - Toronto
Ship bike to London
Ride through Europe down to Africa.
South Africa I will ship the bike to Australia
Ride across or around Australia
Ship bike to South America
Ride back to San Francisco.
So from my understanding I will not need a Carnet in any EU country or South America and Australia you can buy when you get there for fairly cheap. Am I even on the right page so far or am I in Left Field.
So how does the Carnet work in Africa??

From what I have heard, you definately need the carnet for many African countries. If you are leaving in April, you should get things sorted out now before you leave.

Give Suzanne a call at the Canadian AA (which issues carnets for Americans), her contact info is on the "carnet" link on the left of the website. I spoke to her a couple of weeks ago and she was very helpful and answered all my questions.

Perhaps the list below would be of some help - its copied from the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme website. I believe they have overall worldwide resposibility for Carnet's. I've also found Carnet's very confusing, but there is a lot of info on their website.

This list may contain errors due to changes in national legislation.
In certain African countries, the CPD is not officially required, but is often used to facilitate temporary importation.
In Brazil, the CPD is not required for vehicles entering by land routes, but it is required for vehicles arriving by boat.
In these European countries, the CPD is required only for certain categories of vehicles. The CPD is not required in these countries for private cars.

Hi Slim,
You must get a carnet, and you will get it from Suzanne at the CAA in Ottawa, Canada. You need money. You send her a list of countries you plan to visit, and the make, and year of your bike. Based on its market value she will tell you how much money you will have to deposit. You can do it all by mail, but start immediately. The mail is slow these days. Think of shipping bike from Ottawa with Kuehne&Nagel. There is a daily non-stop flight Ottawa-London (AC888). Bike will go in container. All you have to do is drain fuel, disconnect battery, and get a certificate of inspection of dangerous goods. I can give you the address of a local inspector. Bike goes on same flight as you, and you can pick it up in London next day. Cost about US$1,000.

I spoke with Suzanne today and she was really helpful and cleared up the whole thing.
If you can get me the number of the shipping company that would help. Is it $1000 just for the bike and extra for your airfare? What airline?
