Carnet bank guarentee against house ideas?

Hi all,

Trying to figure out the cheapest way to get a carnet for india/pak/iran.

Putting house up as guarentee sounds best - so do I have to appeal to my mortgage company northern rock to do this, or my current account people - nat west - or both, or none because my mortgage should be with the bank that holds my current account. Any ideas what department should be contacted or keywords to use when talking to the call centre parrots?

Thank you,

Brian

I am not sure how things work in the UK, but prior to us leaving the USA, I tried to do the same thing for our carnet. After contacting my mortgage company, bank and anyone else I could think of, I found no one who had even a vague idea of what I wanted to do...let alone help me out. Almost nobody knew what a letter of credit even was!

My bank would only give me a letter of credit if I deposited the equivalent amount of money into a CD account...which means I would still have to come up with the money in the first place!

Sorry, this is probably not much of a help, but I had absolutely no luck securing the carnet guarantee with my home.

Hope you have better luck in the UK...

went to the local Nat west near me for a bank guarantee they would do it.. only draw back min. £260 non refundable of course, still better than putting the house up I suppose I have been planning Iran for 18 months and it looks like the pig eyed Bush et al is going to stir up a lot of bad westeners feeling again...fingers crossed and good luck

Hi, go straight to your bank and give them the form from RAC, they will tell you what they want as guarantee. Lloyds branch in Bristol had never heard of Carnet, but RAC told me who to call, no problem after that, cost 120 quid.
Good luck

Cant you buy insurance to cover the deposit? You should be able to get it through the motoring organisation that organises the carnet.

Hi, I have funded the carnet 3 ways, once by insurance policy through the RAC, easy straight forward and you get half the cost of the policy back upon completeion of the carnet, 2nd was by bank gaurantee through Lloyds TSB, I had enough money in my savings account and they just left it there for a year so I actually earnt interest on it. This last time as it was only 3 months I put up a full deposit for £1500 on my credit card and then did a balance transfer to another card with zero interest for 6 months so it wont actually cost me anything just the £85 for the printing of the carnet. This final way is the cheapest and easiest unless I've got my maths horribly wrong. Regards Chris
