Carnet and bike price
 

Hello travellers,

I'm going to buy a carnet for my next trip in middle-east this summer and I need to have 250% of the price of my bike on my bank account as I'm going to cross Egypt (and some other countries asking for the carnet)...

My bike is a KTM 990 Adventure, approx 10.000euros... so 250% = 25.000euros... :(

- Can I say the bike is only 6.000euros for example ? Or 5.000 ? Or 1.000 ?
- Is the price of the bike (and/or of the deposit) wrote on the carnet ? I mean, does the customs officers in Egypt, Libya, etc, will see how much I put on my bank account for the carnet ?

In France they don't ask for any certificate to justify the price of the bike to deliver a carnet.

Finding 25.000euros is going to be a pain, a lower amount would makes things really easier...

If you had a uk registered bike you'd talk to the RAC. They would say the value is just that. I'd say...

Look in the papers. See what the tattiest example of your bike would cost. THEN HALVE IT. This is your bike's new carnet 'value'.

You may now sleep easy knowing you haven't 'taken the piss' as much as some people or as much as Egypt does!

The price is mentionned on your carnet. They don't know what your bike is worth back home, so don't bother too much. I've had one customs guy pointing at the 300€ euro's in my carnet and raising his eyebrows. That was it (but then, the car wasn't worth more then that either).

IF someone would ask questions, point out it's scratched, has high milage for a bike, it's the wrong collor ... . 1000 might be a bit on the low side though... .

The way I did it was this: I valued my DR650 at about 2,500GBP so needed to come up with 12,500GBPs (500%) for my ride from Singapore to Scotland. I managed to get my mortgage co/bank to underwrite it all by reducing my mortgage facility (ie how much I can take out based on the value to loan ratio) by that much (I'm with Virgin One Account, so my mortgage and bank account is one and the same).

Once I'm done in Iran, I can send the Carnet back to the RAC and my available facility goes back up to what it was before. The total cost for this was around 250GBPs, including the courier fee for sending the Carnet out to Malaysia.
