Carnet advice please. UK-Cape Town.

The bike I am using is being eventually imported into Cape Town (I will have a temp relative residence permit) and I'm riding it there from the UK. So I will already have all the paperwork from RSA for import.

Which African countries will I need a Carnet for - if at all based on my import plans?

Looks like I'm hitting the East route.

:confused1:

Your import plans won't change the requirements for a carnet to travel the east route. It's not needed in all countries but you will need one for places like Egypt so once you have it, it's easiest to travel on it from country to country and avoid the temporary import documents which in some countries provide an alternative method of entry.

One thing to keep in mind however is that you probably want to enter South Africa on a temporary import process and not on your carnet. There have been a couple of posts here about people that entered on their carnets and it was a bit of a hassle to find someone in customs who wasn't confused. It's easy enough to do, just remember that the lower countries in southern africa have a common customs area so you want to enter the first one under temporary import which will allow you to get to South Africa.

The best thing to do is email the RAC. Many people will say you don't need a carnet (and they may be right) for many countries but its safest to get one. (I know one guy who is currently heading fro Egypt and his carnet says he can't go there but he hopes to fool the customs and get in!)

Egypt, Sudan, Kenya, Tanz, Malawi, Zim, Bots, Nam, SA all require the carnet. But you may be able to do without.
