WOW.. that is a lot of Loonies.. I suspect the Mexico part of the insurance might be responsible.

Most US insurance will cover Canada.. but not Mexico. Insurance for Mexico will either be an extra rider or a separate policy altogether.

I would have them run the numbers again for a US policy.. then casually ask if that included Canada also.

When you get down near the southern border go online and look for an Mexico only policy for just the time you will be in Mexico.

Sorry about that. It came up in my new post search.. so guess someone bumped it..

Progressive, GEIKO, Allstate, Farmers are some of the bigger ones. Can't recommend one in particular. All are very good at taking money.. Never had occasion to find out which one gives it back as easily.

Most will let you get a quote online.. So shop around. The cheapest.. just to keep you legal insurance can be less than $10 a month.. I pay about $60.. But that is with high limits.. extra medical.. my gear insured.. uninsured motorist.. etc.

I'm certainly no expert but I do live in the U.S. and travel to Canada and Mexico. I'm not sure how buying car insurance in Canada works but car insurance in the U.S. is extremely variable according to where you live. Also do you need full coverage or only the minimum required by law?

If you buy insurance in the U.S. you can get a "yellow card" at no charge for travel to Canada.

Canada and U.S. insurance companies are not recognized in Mexico. When traveling to Mexico you must buy Mexican insurance. The U.S./Canada might cover damage to you car but don't meet the liability requirements of Mexico. You can purchase Mexican insurance cheaply along the border either long term or for the number of days you plan to be in Mexico.

I do not know. But I would suspect that some do. Living here I'm used to the 'usual' rules.. You will have to do some surfing and find out.

Also I made the assumption you were talking about a motorcycle.. not a car. A car will be more expensive for basic liability insurance of course.. I pay about $45 a month for insurance on my truck.. I forget the exact amounts.. But about 100k in liability + un/under insured motorist, perfect driving record, type of vehicle & my particular area are only some of the variables.

The point is.. 1,700 a year seems way too high.. Look for a Canadian policy that also covers the US.. Or a US policy that covers Canada.. Buy the Mexican insurance separately. Going month to month will give you a higher monthly payment.. But if you are staying less than a year it will be cheaper in the long run..

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
