Cannot Find Reasonable Insurance

I'm looking to insure my motorcycle. I checked with Knof Tours and they were pretty reasonable. I was about to send the cheque and I thought I better ask if the insurance covers the ialand of Malta (in the Mediterrenean) and they replied back no. I have tried Motorcycle Express and their terms stipulate "no bikes over 20 yrs old" and they are pretty pricey anyhow. Are their any other contact numbers other than whats listed on HU? It would be a load of help.

I would go back to Knopf Tours. If Malta doesn't accept the European green card system, then they will have their own insurance coverage which you will have to buy when you reach the island or directly from a company on Malta.

I have also e-mailed Alessie Insurance to see if they can help, but the age of your bike may be a problem. If Stefan Knopf can insure you for the rest of Europe, I would go with them.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Update on this topic from an inquiry to the Malta-EU Information Centre. Bottom line is that Malta DOES accept the green card as proof of insurance.

Dear Ms Johnson,

Thank you for your e-mail.

With reference to your request, I have checked what the current situation is
with the Malta Financial Services Authority. Basically, the answer is yes;
Malta presently accepts the European green card as evidence of vehicle
liability insurance.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us
again.

Susan, Kurt:

The issue with the insurance is not whether or not Malta accepts the European green card, it is whether or not the individual insurance company writing the policy wants to extend coverage ON THAT POLICY to include Malta.

By example, at my workplace in Switzerland we have several company cars, one is a VW Golf and the other is a fairly expensive Mercedes. Both cars are insured by the same company, but the Golf is insured for Hungary, Slovakia, and Morocco, and the Mercedes is not. I suppose we could get coverage for the Mercedes in these countries if we asked (and were willing to pay more).

The motorcycle insurance I got from Motorcycle Express, although expensive, covered just about every country between Iceland and Israel (inclusive), with the exception of only Iraq and Bosnia/Herzegovina. But, the €25 a month liability-only insurance that ADAC (the German auto association) sells only covers the EU countries plus Switzerland.

Bottom line - it's up to the insurance company what boxes they want to tick off on the form.
