Renewing registration with no liability insurance

I am surprised I didn't find this topic on the search...

My motorcycle renewal is due in June, its registered in California, USA. Problem is that they are asking for proof of liability insurance to be included with the renewal. I am in Asia at the moment and obviously do not have any liability insurance.

I plan on being back in the USA in August and plan on doing plenty of riding at that time, so I want my bike to be registered upon entry back to the US.

Any suggestions on how to get my registration renewed???

Hey, good to see that you two are still on the road. We met in Croatia...

My suggestion is to purchase insurance and then cancel it once you have renewed your registration. You should get a prorated refund. Some insurance companies have some sort of "minimum 1 month" before prorating your return on a 6 month policy, but still, its a fairly cheap way to go...

Hi Dani, thanks for the help! I thought of that just after I posted the topic.

Of course we remember you, you are the only other American biker we have met on our entire trip to date! I may be coming through Seattle in August, if you are still there, lets meet up!

Be careful... I don't know how sophisticated CA is, but here in NY if you cancel your insurance they notify the DMV and effectively suspend your registration.

and here in NC they will repossess your licenseplate for at least 30 days if you let it lapse. plus they put a flag in your record for the police to look at when they run your plates

Why not let rego and insurance lapse and re-register upon return?

Not a bad idea if I didn't want to ride my bike for a while after I returned to the USA. But I will be air freighting home from Australia and will be riding around the USA on the bike for a couple of months. So I will need it registered so I can ride immediately when I get back. California is pretty strict on non-registered vehicles and will nail you even if the vehicle is parked.

I cancelled my insurance after I left the USA and even renewed it without my liability insurance. I think California only requests proof of insurance every other year, but I could be wrong.

Looks like I will wait until the last minute and get the insurance for a couple of months before I return to at least get the new registration stickers. My USA motorcycle insurance is pretty cheap anyway.
