USA Transit

Hi, we plan a trip from Ushuaia to Alaska on 2 motorcycles.
After being in Alaska, we come back to USA and would like to leave our bikes for few months.
We'd like go back in France for 5-6 months, and coming back to USA to visit this country.
We have 2 questions and did'nt find answer :
- is it possible to fly out of USA while our motorcycles stay there (I know it's impossible in some countries)
- Do we have a temporary importation for 12 months ? (some people say that we don't have temporary importation if we don't arrive by boat or by plane). If we have, I saw we have to go further than Mexico to reset for 12 months again. Is that right or can we explain ou problem to the custom at the border of Mexico for exemple ?

Thanks

Alaska is in the USA - what is your plan?

Where are the bikes registered?

The plan is Uruguay / Argentina - Ushuaia / Chili / Bolivia / Peru / Equador / Columbia / Central America / Mexico / USA / Canada / USA (Alaska) / Canada / USA (from west to East) / Canada.
With ESTA, we have 3 months between first arrival in USA and last step in Canada.
This is why we'd like to leave our bikes in USA, go back to France for a few months and come back for 3 other months in USA.

Bikes are registered in France

You should be alright, I brought my bike into the US from both Canada and Mexico and whilst I believe they check your registration against their stolen vehicle list there was no temporary importation permit issued and I left it in storage on two occasions without a problem.
I would make sure that you have a return airline ticket to France before trying to enter from Mexico, they often ask and if you don't have one can refuse entry.

Thanks.
We won't have a ticket at first entrance because we arrive from Mecico, travel along west coast to Canada, cross Canada to Anchorage (again USA), come back to USA after crossing Canada again ...
We'll have a map of our travel on the bike, so that we can show them from where we arrive and where we plan to go

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
