Try contacting your own AA, failing that the Greek AA. The Israeli AA should have some useful info, I hope.

If all else fails: Knopf Tours will get you one. Link here on this site.

I crossed from Turkey to Greece in February and was told that Greek insurance companies no longer sell Green Card insurance to foreigners.

You must buy insurance from your country. Ask your local insurance for Green Card for EU!

I wýll be arrývýng ýn Greece from the Turkýsh border ýn a few days. Can you buy temporary ýnsurance for Greece at the border, as ýt ýs ýmpractýcal to obtaýn a grren card ýn the country where my býke ýs regýstered?

If not, wýll they stop you clearýng customs untýl you have thýrd party ýnsurance?

I'm afraid that it may not be available at the Greek border. It's a requirement, though. Even if you enter the EU without it any cop who checks your papers can and probably will stop you from continuing your trip.

I suggest you go to the nearest big city in TR and find the AA office. See whether you can get it there. I got mine in Izmir some years ago, but it may or may not be available any more.

If you can't get it at the Greek border your last recourse will be Knopf Tours, link here on the HUBB.

Good luck and make sure you tell us how you got on. You are not the only one in this predicament.

As I posted earlier, I tried to get insurance at the Greek border after crossing from Turkey in Feb 2006, but the lady who supplies tourist info there made a few calls and told me that Greek companies no longer sell green card insurance to foreigners.
I didn't try to get any in Italy, but in France it costs 90 euro for 3 days insurance. I didn't manage to get any until 6 months and 8 countries later, in Germany.
Organising it in Turkey would be your best bet if possible.
good luck and Mutlu Yillar,
Sean

So I take ýt you managed to get through Greek customs wýthout ýnsurance? I just hope that trýck woýrks for me tomorrow at the border.

I have spent the last two days tryýng to obtaýn a green card ýn Turkey and have now gýven up and am just goýng to head to the border and wýng ýt.

Sýnce I have now managed to get through the last sýx Afrýcan and Mýddle Eastern border crossýngs wýth an expýred carnet, expýred regýstratýon papers, expýred drývers lýcence and no numberplate, I am rather used to just turnýng up and hopýng for the best!

Read your story about Turkýsh gýrls wýth ýnterest Sean.....your Turkýsh language skýlls would have come ýn really handy at a bar ýn Cannakkale last nýght!

Take it easy in Europe, you're probably more likely to get pulled over. I rode through France at night time to avoid the constabulary, i heard they can impound your bike if they catch you without insurance. It would have been a fairly ignominious end to a transcontinental trip.

I didnt get the green card in Greece either, I asked and the guy indicated I should just do something rude. So I didnt bother with it until I got the guilts in Rome. I bourght it at the Italian Auto club near the central rome railway station. It was cheap about 25 euros a month. I earlier used Stefan Knopf and he was great, so if you can organise it before hand he is good.

Matt have you made up a new numberplate..you'll need one in europe! otherwise the police will stop you and want to see your green card.

cheers
