Bringing New Parts into Peru...Customs Issues?

Hello,

This is a Peru specific question, but any ideas will be of use. I am having a friend bring down some new parts for my motorcycle that is currently in Lima, Peru. Parts consist of a new chain, 2 new sprockets, brake pads and fork seals. Some people have warned me that customs may hold the parts for 2 days and then tax you on them while others have told me that my friend can walk right through customs with them in her bag and not even declare them. Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated or first hand experiences.

Thanks,
Hadjh

Its only an issue if your friend is Peruvian - if not just walk straight through customs.

Flew in with a case half filled with repuestos.

On the flight (from USA) they gave us a SUNAT paper stating the rules.

: new repuestos subjet to tax
: used parts prohibited (and would be confiscated)

Since I had a few used parts I decided to declare nothing.

I went thru immigrantion without my luggage, then I grabbed my luggage from the croussel.

Then I walked right thru SUNAT and they did not ask anything, just sent me on my merry way.

They seem to pick people at random and scan their stuff but its a minority.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
